🎲 Board Game Recommendation Updates

Here are all the updates made to our living guide of board game recommendations in the past month:

  • Added Paperback Adventures to Medium-High Complexity picks for 1 player

    • I am a sucker for the “roguelike” formula in video games like Slay the Spire where each session is a standalone run that results in wildly different strategic builds based on all the variable upgrades gained along the way. Paperback Adventures is one of the best tabletop adaptations of this formula that I have played, with the caveat that it is a solo-only word game. But if you enjoy solo play, combos and upgrades, and trying to anagram letters to make words… run (don’t walk) and pick up a copy of this great game.

🎯 What’s Hitting Our Tables

Here is a sampling of games that we have played in the past month:

[Ryan] It has been far too long (over 2 years!) since I got the great A Feast for Odin to the table. What a crazy, sprawling strategy game that combines the deep resource management found in other games from Uwe Rosenberg with intricate spatial puzzling. The way you manipulate and upgrade shapes with the end goal of filling your boards is just unlike anything else I’ve played, and it is so very satisfying. Not the easiest one to get played with my current groups, but really glad I had the opportunity to remind myself why it is one of my top games.

[Daniel] One of my favorite board-gaming experiences this past month was trying my friend’s copy of Lost Ruins of Arnak. What a fun game! The blend of deck-building, worker placement, and exploration makes for a remarkably smooth and engaging experience. Add in the beautiful board, and it’s quickly become a game I’d love to add to my own collection!

[Ryan] Res Arcana is such a pure distillation of an engine-building card game, where you are tasked with racing to build an efficient victory point engine using a lean deck of only 8 cards. Every game has a unique feel as you draft the cards that will be at your disposal, and then tactically search for game-breaking combos. Especially with the first two expansions, this just feels like an endlessly replayable strategic card game.

[Daniel] With my wife’s family in town for Thanksgiving, we had the chance to play a five-player game of Dungeon Fighter. It ended up being the perfect fit for the occasion—a light dungeon crawler with a goofy theme and hilarious mechanics involving chucking dice at a target. My secret weapon was a combo of two items: Ninja Stuff and the Wheel of Fish-Catching. Together, they dealt a ton of damage, and in the end, we managed to pull off the win.

[Ryan] It had been a long while since Sushi Go Party has seen some play, but it is now seeing a resurgence with both of my sons really enjoying it! It has actually been a surprising hit for my whole family to play, as even my 3-year-old son can participate since all that is required to make a legal play is selecting a single card each turn. Having played it several times in the past couple of weeks, I was reminded of how well this game simplifies card drafting while keeping the decisions just interesting enough, and how great the Party edition is with the variation in mixing up the menu.

Happy Gaming! 👋🏻
